I posted this in r/buildapc but thought I'd get advice here too:
Here is a build I'm planning to buy all parts for in the next day or two. : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yYHRhy
I'd like it to be a Hackintosh, something I have no experience with. Let me know if you see any problems.
In the future, I would potentially upgrade the CPU to something like a i9-7940 so that's why I chose an X299 motherboard, even though I know the 8700K is a faster cheaper processor. Also I thought the extra lanes might be useful.
I might add a second GPU at a later date.
You'll see three hard drives on the build. The 500GB M.2 would be the OS/applications. the 2TB would hold video files and cache for projects I'm currently working on, with the 10TB holding footage I may or may not be working on plus whatever else. I will likely just start with the 500GB M.2 drive and add the others later.
I'd also like to have 64gb of ram, but I thought I'd start with 32 and see if it gives me any problem. I know there is faster ram available, but I figured if the guys at Peuget Systems only offers 2666 Ram even on their machines that cost 3x my budget it must be good enough?
I chose the cpu cooler based on tons of reviews, also a friend suggested avoiding a liquid cooler if I ever think I might want to be able to drag this computer out to different locations to work on, that a liquid cooler is a little risky to transport. Is that true?
In addition to everything you see at the pcpartpicker link, I'll also be adding a Blackmagic Mini Monitor 4k playback card.
This computer will primarily be used as an editing/color correction machine with DaVinci Resolve. I'm replacing a 2013 trashcan Mac Pro. It's not really a good time for me to be investing in a computer, especially one that won't see more than a few hours per week of work, but I felt the pressure to sell the Mac Pro before apple comes out with a new model and makes mine drop in value significantly overnight. Also, it's been holding me back, failing on 4k exports with Neat noise reduction. I have a computer provided for me at my day job (production company) that's a beast, but this is is for side projects/passion projects. I quite often have 5k R3D red footage as well as UHD h.264 footage, but I want to be able to handle just about anything anyone can throw at me, even if it means transcoding.
