Something went wrong

So I am doing my first ever hackintosh build - got it all up and running on 10.12.5 and am trying to upgrade to 10.12.6 (just running from the app store) so that I can download the full HS installer.

After running the updater the the screen would show the loading bar and then black screen (I stupidly turned of verbose mode and couldn't get into clover settings - lesson learned here!). Anyway after updating it would just show a black screen - so from this point I have just gone back to my working install of 10.12.5 (I say working - still haven't got the sound working, But i'll cross that bridge when I have a stable reusable way to boot/reinstall HS).

I figure the issue is with kexts? Could be wrong but I found this article - https://hackintosher.com/guides/updating-hackintosh-sierra-10-12-6/ and thought it might be the solution.

My question is this - do I really need to do this middle update to be able to create a bootable HS USB? If I do the above am I likely to be able to complete the 10.12.6 update? Is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks guys
