How bad is my situation? (Unintentional) update from El Cap to High Sierra.

My wife got a new phone and backed up her old one beforehand on our El Cap hackintosh. When she went to restore her new phone it required the latest version of iTunes bundled in High Sierra. She updated it and wouldn’t ya know the machine doesn’t boot now. I’ve read that some have made this update through the Mac Store but were prepared to do so. Is there any way to salvage this situation?

I am able to boot in Safe Mode but can’t mount EFI in Clover because of this method. I’ve also tried disabling Nvidia but no luck. Any help or links would be most appreciated.
