Fresh/First time install of High Sierra, able to get to installer but all drives are listed as "locked" and cannot be mounted or unmounted

So i've built a new system, I5 7600k, Asus Z270f Gaming, Intel iGPU, 500gb Sata SSD and 500gb M.2 SSD.

followed this basic guide: TonyMac High Sierra fresh install

and so far i've been able to get into the OSX installer, I can run disk utility as well as begin the install process but in both cases my disks show as "locked" and if I try to erase, I get an error message that there is insufficient space which seems a bit absurd since both drives are blank. I also cannot mount a drive that is unmounted either by myself or when attempting to erase disk.

Am I missing something obvious?
