I'm on a 5 year old hackintosh right now which still performs pretty well but I want thunderbolt to get the most out of some new audio interfaces.
I did some searching and have seen some builds using the Gigabyte - GA-Z170X-Designare motherboard. Searching around it still seems like kind of a pain to get up and running. Are there any better or other thunderbolt motherboards to use right now? It's also kind of expensive at $260. And looks like you need to install win10 to "activate" thunderbolt.
This is my current build idea, I already have a case and psu I can reuse: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y3X9m8
these are some build threads im referencing here and here
I do see another gigabyte thunderboard motherboard, but not sure if anyone has had success with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H74VKKK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=AZCEI3EMXUPTH&psc=1
The NVMe drives seem kind of annoying to get working, is it worth it? My other alternative is to just find a used mac pro since maybe I could find a deal on a decent one for $2000ish. Would certainly be less hassle but hard to justify on specs/price and with a new one on the horizon next year. And then would have to add external thunderbolt drives/enclosure. Also not sure about monitor connections I currently have two korean 2560x1440 displays. So I'm guessing on a pro I would need to use hdmi and a mini displayport to hdmi adapter? I just want all my gear to work well and be stable.
