Yes, that’s correct. If you want to run and install Windows 8 developer preview on free and stable desktop virtualization software, then you can try with VMware Player 4 now. It works fine with VMware tools too. So, you can get good display experience including working Metro UI and Tiles inside Windows 8 virtual machine.
VMware did not release the standalone downloadable VMware Player 4.0 yet (as of today this article written). The latest version you will be finding in their official site is 3.2.1. But, when you download and try the VMware workstation 8 with 30 days trial serial key, VMPlayer 4.0 also comes with it. VMPlayer 4 will be working on the host machine with no expiry, no matter whether you activated or license is expired for Workstation 8.
Installing Windows 8 on VMware Player 4 is very similar how we did in Workstation 8, check the earlier guide on step by step to install Windows 8 on VMware workstation 8.
I just opened the same Windows 8 virtual machine which is installed in Workstation 8 by VMPlayer 4. It worked fine with VMware tools.
This is the configuration.
You may be missing snapshot feature mainly here but its manageable when running in a free desktop virtualization software.
